Chihuahua clothes size: fitting the smallest dog
Updated October 5, 2026
The AKC standard caps the Chihuahua at 6 lb (2.7 kg), and many products start their smallest size above the weight of a small one, so check the chest range, not just the letter. Measure the chest, neck and back, then look for XXS or teacup sizes, stretch knits, and wide or snap-front necklines that clear the ears.
How big is a Chihuahua?
The AKC standard gives only a ceiling, 6 lb (2.7 kg), and the AKC breed page puts the height at 5 to 8 inches (13 to 20 cm). The international FCI standard sets a range of 2.2 to 6.6 lb (1 to 3 kg), calls 3.3 to 5.5 lb (1.5 to 2.5 kg) ideal, and describes the breed as the smallest pedigree dog in the world.
Its body runs slightly longer than it is tall, according to the AKC standard, so check the back length as well as the chest.
When XS is too big
Many clothing lines start their smallest size above the weight of a small Chihuahua. The table shows, for weights from the bottom of the FCI range to the AKC limit, the size most products list and how often they have no size at all. Find the weight closest to your dog's, then compare its chest girth with the listing.

If even the smallest size is too big, look for an XXS or teacup size, a stretch knit that hugs a narrow chest, or a harness whose chest strap adjusts below your dog's girth. A top that is too big slides sideways, and its leg holes ride up into the armpits.
Necklines, ears and leg holes
The AKC standard describes a rounded apple-dome skull and large, erect ears, so a narrow neck opening has to stretch over a wide head and folds the ears on the way. Wide or snap-front necklines go on without pulling. Check that the leg holes sit at the armpits, not behind them, and are small enough that a leg cannot slip out.
Long-coat Chihuahuas carry a large neck ruff and feathered legs, so measure the neck through the ruff and choose leg openings that do not crush the feathering. The AKC breed page advises brushing a long coat at least once a week, and a day in clothes is a good reason to brush again.
Cold weather
The AKC breed page says Chihuahuas need special care in cold weather. For any short-coated dog, AKC winter tips suggest a sweater or coat once the air, wind chill included, drops below 45°F (7°C), and short outings below freezing. Dry your dog if it gets wet, and see the winter coat guide for coats.
Handling a tiny dog
The AKC calls the breed too small for roughhousing, and the standard describes a confident, terrier-like temperament. Dress your Chihuahua on your lap or on the floor, not on a table it could jump from, and guide each leg through by the elbow instead of pulling the paw. Keep sessions short and reward with treats.
The dog clothes size guide shows how to measure for harnesses, boots and coats. The Pomeranian guide covers another dog at the bottom of the size charts.

Frequently asked questions
What size clothes does a Chihuahua wear?
Most adult Chihuahuas need the smallest size a shop sells, and a very small one may need XXS or a teacup size. Go by the chest range on the listing, not the weight.
Do long-coat and smooth-coat Chihuahuas wear the same size?
The body is the same, but a long coat adds a neck ruff and leg feathering that need roomier necklines and leg holes. Measure each one under its coat, on the body.
When does a Chihuahua need a sweater?
AKC winter tips put the line for short-coated dogs at 45°F (7°C), wind chill included, and the AKC says Chihuahuas need special care in the cold.
Why does my Chihuahua's shirt keep slipping off one shoulder?
It is probably too wide in the chest. Measure the chest girth again and choose the size whose range includes it, or a stretch knit that hugs a narrow chest.
