Corgi clothes size: long body, deep chest, low belly

Updated October 5, 2026

Measure a Pembroke Welsh corgi's chest and back length and compare both with the chart, because the back is about 40 percent longer than the dog is tall. Let the chest decide for sweaters and harnesses, and the back length decide for raincoats and coats, which have to cover. For rain and snow, pick gear with a belly panel, since a corgi's belly sits close to the ground.

How big a Pembroke Welsh corgi is

The AKC standard puts Pembrokes at 10 to 12 in (25 to 30 cm) at the shoulder. It caps weight at 30 lb (13.6 kg) for males and 28 lb (12.7 kg) for females, with show dogs around 27 lb (12.2 kg) and 25 lb (11.3 kg), and sets no minimum. The FCI standard gives 22 to 26 lb (10 to 12 kg) for males and 20 to 24 lb (9 to 11 kg) for females.

The Cardigan Welsh Corgi is a separate, heavier breed. Its AKC standard asks for males of 30 to 38 lb (13.6 to 17.2 kg) and females of 25 to 34 lb (11.3 to 15.4 kg), with a longer body at a length-to-height ratio of 1.8 to 1. Measure a Cardigan on its own rather than going by Pembroke sizes.

Should you size a corgi by back length or chest?

The Pembroke standard wants the back, withers to tail, about 40 percent longer than the dog is tall. A corgi 11 in (28 cm) tall at the shoulder has a back of roughly 15 in (39 cm). The rib cage is long and egg-shaped, and the deep chest sits low between short front legs, so a size can fit the chest and come up short on the back, or the reverse.

Decide by what the garment has to do. A sweater or harness must close around the chest, so the chest decides. A raincoat or snow coat must cover, so the back length decides, as long as the chest still closes. If no size does both, look for cuts sold for corgis and dachshunds, and see the dachshund guide, which deals with the same problem.

How to measure a corgi

Back lengthCollar to tail base, measured over the backStand your corgi square. The back is long for the height, so this number often decides coats.
ChestAround the ribcage where it hangs lowest between the short front legsThe chest drops low between the short legs, so run the tape flat underneath it.
NeckWhere a collar sitsThe standard gives a thicker, longer ruff around the neck and chest, so leave room.

Four weights make up the rows. The top three are Pembrokes, from the FCI's lightest female to the AKC limit for males, and the bottom row is a male Cardigan at the top of his standard. Each column of tops, raincoats or harnesses shows the label that catalog listings most often give for that weight.

Belly coverage for rain and snow

Short legs keep the belly close to puddles, slush and snow. The AKC notes that both corgi breeds can benefit from a coat in winter despite their thick fur, because their short stature brings them into direct contact with snow and ice. The coat itself is thick and weather-resistant, so the weak spot is the belly.

Look for a raincoat or four-leg rain suit with a belly panel that reaches the chest, leg openings wide enough for heavy-boned forelegs, and room at the hips, where the standard calls for fuller hair. On a male, the panel must end before he pees. For more on rain gear, see the raincoat guide.

The standard also calls this a shedding coat, so pick fabrics that brush or wash clean.

Frequently asked questions

What size clothes does a corgi wear?

It depends on whether the garment has to close or to cover. Measure chest and back length, then let the chest decide for sweaters and harnesses and the back length for raincoats and coats.

Does a corgi need a coat in winter?

It can help. The double coat is thick and weather-resistant, but the AKC notes that short legs bring a corgi into direct contact with snow and ice, so a coat with a belly panel helps in snow and slush.

Do Pembroke and Cardigan corgis wear the same size?

Often not. The AKC standard puts Cardigans at 25 to 38 lb (11.3 to 17.2 kg) with a longer body, while Pembrokes top out at 30 lb (13.6 kg), so measure a Cardigan on its own.

How do I measure a corgi's back length?

Stand your corgi square, start the tape at the collar and stop where the tail or the docked stub begins.
