Dachshund clothes size: fit the long back first
Updated October 5, 2026
For a dachshund, match the back length first, taken over the long spine from collar to tail, then check the chest. A regular dog coat that fits the chest often stops well short of the tail, and sizing up only makes the neck and leg openings too big. Look for a long-body cut, with a belly panel for wet weather.
Standard and miniature dachshund sizes
The AKC standard puts standard-size dogs at 16 to 32 lb (7.3 to 14.5 kg) and treats miniatures as a class for dogs of 11 lb (5 kg) and under at 12 months or older, with no lower limit. The UK's Royal Kennel Club gives 10 lb (4.5 kg) as a miniature's ideal weight.
The FCI, the international federation of kennel clubs, sorts dachshunds by chest girth instead, measured once the dog is at least 15 months old. A miniature male's chest measures over 12.6 up to 14.6 in (32 to 37 cm), a female's over 11.8 up to 13.8 in (30 to 35 cm), with the smaller rabbit size below and the standard size above. The chest is the one number a breed standard and a size chart share.
Why dachshund clothes are hard to fit
The FCI standard asks for a body 1.7 to 1.8 times as long as the dog is tall, with ground clearance of about a third of the height. The breastbone is prominent and the chest runs well back between the front legs. That shape causes three fitting problems.
- Length. Sizing up to reach the tail also widens the neck and leg holes, so the coat hangs loose. A long-body cut adds length alone.
- Belly. The belly meets wet grass, puddles and snow, and the AKC notes that low dogs such as dachshunds get cold when it gets wet. A belly panel helps; on a male it must end before he pees.
- Leg holes. The front legs sit under the deepest part of the chest, so small or close-set openings rub the inside of the legs.
How to measure a dachshund
- Stand your dog square on a level floor. Lay the tape on the spine at the collar and follow the long back until the tail begins. Match this number first.
- Take the chest girth where the ribcage drops lowest, behind the front legs, with the tape flat over the breastbone.
- Measure the neck where the collar sits, and weigh your dog.
- If back length and chest point to different sizes, choose a long-body cut instead of sizing up.

In the table, each cell is the size label most catalog tops, raincoats and harnesses give for that weight. The first row is a miniature at the Royal Kennel Club's ideal weight, and the others span the AKC range for standards. A label only settles chest and weight, so check each listing's back length too.

Back health and harnesses
Dachshunds are prone to intervertebral disc disease (IVDD). The Dachshund Club of America estimates that about one in four will have some disc trouble in their lifetime, and lists preventing obesity among the ways to lower the risk.
Many owners use a harness to keep pressure off the neck. Dachshund Health UK, the breed's health charity, points out that 90 to 95 percent of the breed's disc herniations happen in the middle and lower back, so a harness does not protect the back by itself. If your dog has had a neck disc problem, ask your vet which to use.
Pick gear that goes on while your dog stands, such as a step-in harness or a coat that fastens under the chest, so you never lift the front legs high or twist the back. The corgi guide covers another long, low build, and the winter coat guide covers cold-weather gear.

One photo of your dachshund is enough to preview a long-body coat or harness. Pawlooks reads the build from the picture and checks it against every product's chart, and with the weight entered the pick gets tighter. Because the preview is an AI visualization, compare its back length with the listing before you buy.
Frequently asked questions
What size clothes does a miniature dachshund wear?
Measure instead of trusting the label. Match the back length first, then the chest, and since a regular small size is often too short, look for cuts sold for dachshunds.
How do I measure my dachshund for a coat?
Follow the spine with the tape from the collar to where the tail starts, then circle the chest where it drops lowest. If the chest needs a bigger size than the back, choose a long-body cut rather than sizing up.
Is a harness or a collar better for a dachshund?
Many owners prefer a harness to keep pressure off the neck. Most of the breed's disc problems occur in the middle and lower back, according to Dachshund Health UK, so after a neck disc problem, ask your vet which to use.
Why do dachshund coats need a belly panel?
With little ground clearance, the belly gets soaked in rain and snow, and a wet belly makes a low dog cold. A belly panel keeps it dry; on a male, check that it ends before he pees.
