French bulldog clothes size: measure the chest first
Updated October 5, 2026
Size a French bulldog by the chest, not by weight or the size label. Wrap the tape around the ribcage where it is widest, take the size whose chest range includes that number, then check the back length, because the breed's short body makes many cuts run long. Keep the neck opening loose, and walk your Frenchie on a harness rather than a collar.

How big a French bulldog is
The AKC standard sets only an upper limit. An adult French bulldog over 28 lb (12.7 kg) is disqualified, and the standard names no minimum. The FCI standard, used by kennel clubs in many other countries, gives 20 to 31 lb (9 to 14 kg) for males and 18 to 29 lb (8 to 13 kg) for females.
Weight says less than usual about fit in this breed. The AKC describes a broad, deep, full chest on a short, well-rounded body, with a thick neck and short front legs set wide apart. A size picked from the weight alone can bind across the ribs, so trust the tape measure.
Why clothes fit the chest but not the length
When a garment goes up a size, the chest, neck and length all grow together. Size up until the chest closes on a Frenchie and the back grows too, so the extra length bunches over the hips. On a male, a belly panel that reaches too far back also gets wet when he pees.
Look for cuts sold for French bulldogs, pugs or other short, stocky dogs, or for stretch fabrics that hug the body. Check the leg openings as well, because with the front legs set wide, narrow armholes rub the armpits.
How to measure a French bulldog
| Measurement | Where | On a Frenchie |
|---|---|---|
| Chest | Over the ribcage at its fullest, right behind the front legs | This number picks the size. Hold the tape snug without squeezing. |
| Neck | Low on the thick neck, at the collar line | Measure over the loose throat skin without pulling it in, and choose a neck opening with room to spare. |
| Back length | Collar line to tail root, along the short back | Compare it with the chart once the chest fits. It is often shorter than the chart lists for that size. |
| Weight | On a scale, holding your dog and subtracting your own weight | A cross-check only. The chest decides. |

Below, each row is a weight and each column a garment type, with the label most catalog listings assign there. Rows run from the lightest female in the FCI standard to the AKC limit and then the FCI maximum for males. Treat it as a first guess and let the chest measurement decide.

Breathing, heat and the neck
French bulldogs are flat-faced (brachycephalic) and prone to breathing problems. The PDSA, a UK veterinary charity, advises clipping the lead to a well-fitted harness instead of a collar, because pressure on the neck can make those problems worse.
The same logic applies to clothing. Skip turtlenecks, tight hoods and snug neck bands, and check that a raincoat's hood or chin strap lies flat when your dog lowers its head.
Cold is the opposite problem. The FCI standard describes a short, close coat with no undercoat, so a sweater or lined coat helps on cold walks. For cold and wet days, see the winter coat guide and the raincoat guide.

Before ordering a raincoat or harness, you can preview it on your own Frenchie from one photo. Pawlooks reads the build, compares it with each product's chart and shows the chest measurement, and typing in the weight sharpens the size pick. What you see is an AI visualization, and the real garment may sit or color differently.
Frequently asked questions
What size clothes does a French bulldog wear?
No single size fits the breed, because chest size varies more than weight. Measure the ribcage at its widest, buy the size whose chest range fits that number, and then compare the back length with the chart.
Should a French bulldog wear a harness or a collar?
A harness for walks. The PDSA advises clipping the lead to a well-fitted harness, since pressure on the neck can worsen breathing problems in flat-faced dogs.
Do French bulldogs need a coat in winter?
On cold days, often yes. The coat is short and close with no undercoat, according to the FCI standard, so a sweater or lined coat keeps a Frenchie warmer outdoors. Take it off indoors.
Why are French bulldog clothes always too long?
The breed pairs a broad chest with a short body. A garment big enough for that chest is usually cut for a dog with a longer back, so look for cuts made for stocky breeds or for stretch fabric.
