Golden retriever clothes size: what fits and what they need
Updated October 5, 2026
Most adult golden retrievers take a large or extra-large size, and many fall between the two, so measure the chest over the coat and let that number decide. A healthy adult golden rarely needs a winter coat, because its dense double coat already insulates it. What a golden does use is a raincoat for long walks in steady rain and a bright vest for dark or hunting-season walks.

How big a golden retriever is
The AKC standard gives males 65 to 75 lb (29.5 to 34 kg) at 23 to 24 in (58 to 61 cm) tall, and females 55 to 65 lb (24.9 to 29.5 kg) at 21.5 to 22.5 in (55 to 57 cm). The body is slightly longer than tall, at a ratio of 12 to 11, and deep through the chest, with the brisket reaching the elbow. A golden's weight often lands on the line between two sizes, which is why the chest measurement matters more than the scale.
Measuring over a thick coat
The standard asks for a dense, water-repellent coat with a good undercoat, a natural ruff at the neck and feathering on the neck, belly, legs and tail. That hair adds to every measurement, and the coat should not be clipped to make clothes fit, so measure it as it is.
| Measurement | Where | On a golden |
|---|---|---|
| Chest | Around the deepest part of the ribcage, behind the front legs | Pull the tape snug through the feathering without pressing the coat flat, then match that number to a chest range on the chart. |
| Neck | Around the base of the neck | The ruff is thickest here, so measure where the garment's collar will actually sit. |
| Back length | Down the back, collar line to tail | Goldens are a little longer than tall, so compare it with the chart even when the chest fits. |
| Weight | On a vet or pet-store scale | Useful when your dog is between sizes. The chest still decides. |
Steps that hold for any breed are laid out in the dog sizing basics.
Three weights appear below: a female at the low end, the line between the sexes, and a male at the top of the standard. For tops, raincoats, vests and harnesses, each cell gives the label most catalog listings use at that weight. Where a column switches label from one row to the next, the chest measurement settles it.

Does a golden retriever need a winter coat?
Usually not. The AKC notes that large dogs with thick coats are generally protected from the cold, and the golden's standard calls for exactly that kind of dense double coat. Puppies and senior dogs feel the cold more, so an older golden may welcome a light layer on a freezing morning. A knit sweater for a holiday photo is fine for a few minutes indoors, and the Christmas outfits guide has ideas.
Raincoats and visibility vests
The outer coat sheds light rain, but on a long walk in steady rain the feathering on the belly and legs soaks through and collects mud, and a thick undercoat dries slowly. A raincoat that covers the back and chest, ideally with a belly panel, keeps most of that dry. For a large male, check that the raincoat's biggest size still closes around his chest. A smooth shell also brushes clean of hair more easily than a knit, which helps with a coat that sheds moderately all year and heavily once or twice a year.
For visibility, the AKC advises putting dogs in an easily seen orange safety vest in the field during hunting season. An orange or reflective vest also helps drivers spot a golden on dark evening walks. The raincoat guide covers rain gear in more detail.

Curious how a raincoat or vest would look on your own golden? Send one photo. Pawlooks picks up build and coat, sets them against each product's chart and narrows the size further once it has the weight. Your photo is edited rather than redrawn, yet the result remains an AI visualization, and a real coat may hang or color differently.
Frequently asked questions
What size clothes does a golden retriever wear?
Most adults wear large or extra large, and many sit between the two. Measure the chest over the coat; the right size is the one whose chest span holds your number.
Do golden retrievers need coats in winter?
A healthy adult rarely does, because the dense double coat insulates it. Puppies, seniors and dogs with health problems feel the cold more, so ask your vet if you are unsure.
Should I shave my golden retriever in summer?
No. The Golden Retriever Club of America's education director, quoted by the AKC, advises against shaving or clipping, because the top coat wraps the body like a jacket. Brush out the loose undercoat instead.
Is a raincoat worth it for a golden retriever?
For long walks in steady rain, yes. The coat sheds light rain, but the belly and leg feathering soak through and the undercoat dries slowly, so a raincoat with a belly panel saves drying time.
