Pomeranian clothes size: measuring through the double coat
Updated October 5, 2026
The AKC standard puts Pomeranians at 3 to 7 lb (1.4 to 3.2 kg), so they wear the smallest sizes most shops make, even though the coat makes a Pom look bigger. Press the tape into the fur until it meets the body at the chest and neck, and pick roomy, stretchy necklines that leave space for the ruff.

How big is a Pomeranian?
The AKC standard allows 3 to 7 lb (1.4 to 3.2 kg) and calls 4 to 6 lb (1.8 to 2.7 kg) ideal for show dogs. Poms stand 6 to 7 inches (15 to 18 cm) at the shoulder, per the AKC breed page. The standard describes a square dog with a short back, its body as long as it is tall at the withers.
A short back changes what to check. A top that fits the chest can run long on a Pom and bunch over the tail, so compare the chart's back length with your dog's.
How to measure through the coat
The Pomeranian is double-coated, with a short, dense undercoat under long, harsh guard hairs that stand off the body. A tape laid on top measures fluff. Work it down until it rests on the ribs behind the elbows, then add the two-finger allowance.
| Spot | What the coat does | How to measure |
|---|---|---|
| Neck | A ruff frames the head and spreads over the shoulders and chest | Slide the tape under the ruff to the base of the neck |
| Chest | Guard hairs stand off the body | Press through to the ribs, then add two fingers |
| Back | The plumed tail lies flat on the back | Lift the tail and measure to its base |
| Hind legs | The thighs carry a heavy skirt of coat | Check that leg openings do not crush it |
Coat differs between Poms of the same weight. The standard notes that females may carry less coat than males, and that a puppy coat can be shorter and dense, sometimes without guard hairs. Measure your own dog, and measure a puppy again as the adult coat comes in.
Necklines and the ruff
A tight neck opening flattens the ruff and rubs it into knots. Choose wide or stretchy necklines, or snap and hook closures, and check that two fingers slide under the neckline on top of the ruff. The AKC breed page recommends brushing down to the skin once a week to prevent mats. Whenever your Pom has worn clothes, brush the neck and armpits as well.
Sizes across the Pomeranian weight range
The rows are the low, middle and high end of the AKC weight range. Coat varies so much between Poms that a row is only a first guess. Let the chest you measured with the tape pressed into the fur make the choice.

Pomeranians and heat
The double coat insulates both ways. According to the AKC, the undercoat holds warmth close in winter and keeps cooler air near the skin in summer, and dogs with thick or double coats are at higher risk of overheating. Skip clothes on hot days, keep costumes for short indoor photos, and take them off as soon as your dog starts to pant hard.
Do not shave a Pom to make clothes fit or to cool it down. Groomers quoted by the AKC advise against shaving double coats, because the two layers grow back at different rates and the coat may stop working properly. For hot walks, the AKC suggests a cooling vest or cooling bandana instead.
Holiday costumes have their own Christmas outfits guide. For a tiny dog with a single, silky coat instead of a double one, compare the Maltese guide, and see the dog clothes size guide for harness and boot measurements.

Frequently asked questions
What size clothes does a Pomeranian wear?
Most Poms take a shop's XS or S. Coat thickness makes weight a poor guide, so choose by the chest girth you took with the tape pressed through the fur.
Should I measure my Pomeranian over the fur or under it?
Under it. Press the tape through the coat until it touches the body, then add the two-finger allowance. A tape resting on the fur reads too large.
Can a Pomeranian wear clothes in summer?
Only briefly. The AKC counts double-coated dogs among those at higher risk of overheating, so keep clothes for short indoor moments and use a cooling vest on hot walks.
Should I shave my Pomeranian so clothes fit better?
No. Groomers quoted by the AKC advise against shaving double coats, because the coat may grow back unevenly and stop insulating properly.
