Poodle clothes size: toy, miniature and standard

Updated October 5, 2026

Poodles come in three varieties with very different weights: the AKC lists toys at 4 to 6 lb (1.8 to 2.7 kg), miniatures at 10 to 15 lb (4.5 to 6.8 kg) and standards at 40 to 70 lb (18.1 to 31.8 kg). Size by chest girth, measured through the curls to the skin. Measure again after each clip, because coat length changes the chest girth.

Which poodle do you have?

The AKC standard separates the three varieties by height at the shoulder, not by weight. The weights come from the AKC breed page for each variety.

StandardOver 15 in (38 cm)40 to 50 lb (18.1 to 22.7 kg) for females, 60 to 70 lb (27.2 to 31.8 kg) for males
AKC poodle varieties

The AKC recognizes only these three. Teacup is a seller's word, not a variety, and a puppy sold as a toy can grow into the gap between toy and miniature weights. Size your own dog with a tape, not by its paperwork.

One row per poodle variety

The three rows sit near the middle weight of the toy, miniature and standard varieties, in that order. Your variety's row shows the size most products give a poodle of that weight. Treat it as a starting point and let your dog's chest girth decide.

How to measure through a curly coat

Stand your poodle square and work the tape through the curls until it touches the skin, around the ribs right behind the elbows. Measure the neck at the collar line and the back along the topline to the root of the tail. Note how long the coat was that day.

A poodle's coat keeps growing between clips, so the numbers follow the grooming calendar. According to the AKC breed page, many owners book a professional groom every four to six weeks, and most pet owners choose the short sporting clip, which the standard limits to a blanket of coat no longer than one inch (2.5 cm). Buy for the coat your dog will wear the item over.

Square build, long legs

The standard calls for a squarely built dog, with the body from breastbone to rump about equal to the height at the shoulder. A poodle stands tall for its length, so check a four-legged onesie at the legs and the seat, not just the chest. Look for the leg length on the chart, and make sure your dog can sit without the back seam pulling.

Clipped coats and cold walks

A short clip leaves little insulation. The AKC names all three poodle sizes among the dogs that can use a coat in cold weather, because a clipped coat lacks the protection of a longer one. Read the winter coat guide before cold walks.

Curls tangle where fabric rubs, such as under the arms, under harness straps and along the collar line. Unless the coat is kept short, the AKC says to brush daily, because a full coat that is not brushed to the skin mats near the roots. Brush those spots after a day in clothes.

For another curly coat, read the bichon frise guide. Harnesses, boots and raincoats each need their own measurements, listed in the dog clothes size guide.

Frequently asked questions

What size clothes does a toy poodle wear?

A toy poodle of 4 to 6 lb (1.8 to 2.7 kg) usually needs the smallest size a shop makes. Letters vary between shops, so buy by the chest number you took under the curls.

Do toy and miniature poodles wear the same size?

Rarely. A miniature can weigh more than twice as much as a toy, with a wider chest and a longer back, so measure each dog on its own.

Does my poodle's clip change its clothing size?

Yes. A full coat adds bulk around the chest that a short sporting clip removes. Measure with the coat at the length it will have in the season the clothes are for.

Do poodles need a coat in winter?

Often. The AKC lists all three poodle sizes among dogs that can use a coat in the cold, because a clipped coat insulates less than a full one.
